Braille and Talking Book Library

The Michigan Braille and Talking Book Library provides library service in audio or braille format to eligible patrons free of charge. In addition to books and magazine patrons have access to music scores and music books in braille and large print, music-appreciation materials, and instruction materials for various instruments. Patrons do not have to be blind to benefit from services provided. People experiencing a variety of conditions, including Parkinson’s disease, Diabetes, Cerebral Palsy, Dyslexia and even those currently reading large print materials all potentially qualify for BTBL service.

NFB-NEWSLINE is a free service avaible to anyone who is blind, visually impaired or print-disabled. They offer over 400 publications to choose from, emergency weather alerts, seven-day forecasts, job listings, TV listings, retail ads etc. These can be accessed by a touch-tone telephone, a free mobile app, a secure website and a variety of portable players. WKAR Radio Reading Service

WKAR Radio Reading Service is a 24/7 free reading service to individuals who cannot access, traditional reading materials due to visual, physical or cognitive conditions. Content includes newspapers, weather forecasts, novels, grocery and department store ads, community calendar events etc. The program loans qualified individuals a special portable radio free of charge. The radio is pre-tuned and can be used within a 60-mile radius of WKAR’S Okemos/Meridian Township broadcasting tower. Disability Network Capital Area provides independent living information and links people with disabilities of all ages with avaible services that meet their needs. DNCAP also has an assistive technology program which can demonstrate assistive devices.
An individual with a qualifying disability is eligible for a disability license plate or parking placard. Michigan law requires that people be blind or have any condition that significantly limits their ability to walk or requires a wheelchair, walker, crutch or other assistive device. There is a section on the application that needs to be completed by your physician, chiropractor, optometrist, nurse practitioner, or physician’s assistant.
